Hawken Writing Center
The writing center exists to help both under and upperclassmen with their writing. We help run labs in underclassmen English seminars to help students develop writing skills and solidify their grammar skills. We also offer one-on-one help with students who need help with specific papers. As a second-year writing center intern, it is now my job to create my own writing center project. I am creating a writing lab for the middle school for both grammar and thesis skills. I hope to finish my planning in the fall and then travel to the middle school in the spring to implement my project.
Hawken Language Center
The language center is a fairly new creation at Hawken. My job is a Spanish conversation facilitator. Weekly, I sit down with students in Spanish 1-3 and ask them questions and discuss their current class topics. This exists to help students improve their Spanish skills with less pressure than a classroom. I've also realized that these conversations are helping me improve my Spanish skills too.
Gender Sexuality Alliance
The Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) exists to bring LGBTQ+ students and allies together. We have discussions about current LGBTQ+ issues and plan activities with other GSAs from surrounding high schools. The GSA provides a safe space for students of all identities. We also organize school-wide events to raise LGBTQ+ awareness.
